Ok, I haven't really started the gardening year yet. My seed packets aren't all laid out and I haven't come up with a new scheme for the front flower bed. For some reason I've just not got the vim. But that's okay because it's January and I've still got lots of time.
This week I've ordered my sweet pea seeds (only trying 1 set this year as I expect not a lot of sunshine until the building site goes in 2014). I'm going to revisit one of my favourite magazines of last year which had an article on herb gardens. From small beginnings comes another gardening year.

The Gardens of the Tokkachi Memorial Forest
This garden was designed in collaboration by the inspirational Dan Pearson and Takano Landscape planning and recently won the Grand Award at the first Society of Garden Designers awards ceremony, here is the Meadow Garden.
The Millennium Forest is a garden for tourist in Haobi on the island of Hokkaido which was originally designed as a carbon-offset activity for the Tokachi Manichi Newspaper company. It is a large project with different areas meant to bring the visitor into contact with the environment as a student and learner. It is currently divided into the Earth Garden, the Meadow Garden, the Forest Garden and the Farm Garden. The garden is also meant to be a bequest to future generations to try and counter-balance the environmental damage that they will also inherit, showing the different habitats in the region. In fact, this is very reminiscent of the Heemparks. You can also hire Segways to tour the garden! Here is the Earth Garden.
Dan Pearson has aimed to bring the Japanese aesthetic to this project, working with nature rather than imposing design and also reflecting the place that it is rather than the place he wants it to be. Here is a link to his website where there are some even more beautiful pictures of the garden, frankly it makes my heart hurt a little to look at these.
